HP Tycoon Research
We came across this Grid Computing in continuous research between CERN and HP. There was the possibility to register and use the computational power on consumption. A complex platform all java and Xen based. The experiments of use did not last long but they were useful to make us reflect a lot on the importance of the concept of buying and using computational power, in this specific case it is also possible to sell one’s own computational power.
Research on the Tycoon project began in 2004 and will be tested in its maximum splendor on an experimental basis in the laboratories of CERN in Geneva when the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) will come into operation.
This “time machine”, a 27-kilometer underground tunnel between France and Switzerland, the largest in the world, works at very low temperatures (-271°C) to exploit the superconductivity of all the cables necessary for electromagnets useful for accelerating subatomic particles (hadrons).
In the case of the experiment that will be carried out in October 2008 they will be beams of protons that will collide at speeds very close to those of light, reproducing (they say) the conditions before the Big Bang.
The controversy over this experiment will be many given the theories of some scientists about the possibility of opening time gaps to the future.
However, the amount of data that the LHC will generate will be 15 petabytes each year and consequently the need for computational resources to allow CERN scientists to process this information will have to be enormous
